Mixed Reviews for Drake’s Thank Me Later

If it weren’t for all the hype around Drake and all the money behind him, would anyone genuinely like Thank Me Later? I think it’s one of those albums we need to reflect on before we really know if it’s any good. But since it’s only just getting reviewed and comes out next week, it’s too soon for reflection. Most of the “critic’s” reviews are positive, or at least claim to be. They give it high marks and tie up the review with how good the album is but you can’t help but notice some briefly stated negatives that may have deserved a closer look.
I don’t believe a person needs to have had a tough upbringing in a shady area to be a successful MC and I give Drake credit for not even pretending (as some artists do). But the things he raps about…I just find myself wondering “who cares?” It’s like, I get it, money changes things but is that all you really have to offer?
Drake does have some impressive people collaborating including tracks with Jay-Z, T.I., The Dream and others. And of course Nicki appears on Up All Night. And that song is painful.
To sum it up, I think the hype makes Drake. Yes he’s talented but I just don’t think he consistently contributes to hip hop. His album will be a pop success but I don’t think it’ll be timeless. Overall it’s monotonous and hard to listen to. Actually, it’s just not good.
Here’s a a from the album. Of course I’m going to include Fancy featuring T.I., and even that didn’t impress me.

I’m tempted to say “what a load of crap!” just for the sake of irony, but I’ll refrain
